Pioneering stove project to save 28m tonnes CO2 in five years

13.11.2007 Pioneering stove project to save 28m tonnes CO2 in five years

Climate Care's project origination and sourcing arm, Pioneer Carbon, today announced a pioneering partnership with Camco to jointly fund efficient stoves in China.

Each stove is estimated to save a whopping 8 tonnes CO2 per year - the same as someone flying from London to Beijing and back three times!

Such large savings from such as small technology are possible as most rural Chinese families rely on coal for their cooking and heating.  The efficient stove makes its savings by using fuel efficiently and being capable of burning crop waste instead of coal.

The stove is designed and marketed by Shenzhou Daxu Bio-energy Technology Company Ltd (Daxu - pronounced 'Da-shu'), who won a prestigious Award Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy, presented by Al Gore, for their work.

In co-operation with Daxu and the Government of Yanqing County, Pioneer and Camco will be funding a trial of 400 stoves to accurately measure the carbon savings, and following a successful outcome will commit to funding widespread production of tens of thousands of stoves over the next five years.  The funding will subsidise the stove, making its widespread adoption feasible.

It is expected that the carbon savings will achieve accreditation under the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism.
